User-Generated Content Policy

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Inmate Reviews only works if people can trust what they read here. This policy explains what you can post, what we remove, and how to report a problem. It is part of our Terms of Service, and if the two ever conflict, the Terms govern.

1. What This Policy Covers

This policy applies to everything people submit for display on Inmate Reviews, including:

  • Reviews, replies, and display names
  • GIFs attached to reviews or replies
  • Job listings submitted through Add a Job
  • Advertiser listings, including business descriptions, logos, and links
  • Anything else we later allow users to post

We call all of this “content.” Whoever submits content is responsible for it.

2. Who May Post

You must be at least 18 years old, or have a parent or guardian’s permission, to post a review or reply. Businesses that post job listings or buy advertising must be legitimate businesses with the right to offer what they list.

3. What Belongs Here

Inmate Reviews is for honest, first-hand accounts of jails, prisons, detention centers, and the services connected to them. Good content:

  • Describes your own experience, or the experience of an immediate family member you supported, and says which
  • Sticks to what happened: conditions, communication, visitation, medical care, safety, staff conduct, fees, and similar topics
  • Is truthful and not exaggerated
  • Stays within 1,000 characters for a review or reply

Negative reviews are welcome. We do not remove content because it is critical or because someone disagrees with it.

4. What Is Not Allowed

We remove content that:

  • Is false or fake. This includes made-up experiences, reviews written for someone else to post, and reviews that pretend to be from a different person.
  • Exposes private information. Do not post booking or inmate ID numbers, home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, health information, or the full names of private individuals, including other people in custody and their families.
  • Threatens or harasses. No threats, intimidation, stalking, bullying, hate speech, or content that celebrates or encourages violence.
  • Endangers safety or security. No escape plans, instructions for bringing in contraband, staff schedules or movements, or anything that could put people inside or outside a facility at risk.
  • Is sexual or exploits minors. No sexually explicit content. Any content that sexualizes a minor is removed immediately and reported to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
  • Involves a conflict of interest. Do not review a facility or business you own, work for, or compete with.
  • Was paid for. Do not offer or accept money, discounts, or anything of value for writing, changing, or removing a review.
  • Is spam or advertising. No unsolicited promotions, repeated posts, or links meant to sell something. Paid listings belong in the Preferred Lists.
  • Breaks the law or someone else’s rights. No content that is illegal, defamatory, or infringes a copyright or trademark.
  • Is harmful code. No links to malware, phishing, or deceptive sites.

5. Replies From Facilities, Agencies, and Businesses

Facilities, agencies, and businesses may reply to reviews. Their replies follow every rule in this policy, and they must also:

  • Stay respectful and professional
  • Never reveal private information about a reviewer or anyone in custody, including whether a person is or was in custody
  • Never threaten, retaliate against, or try to identify a reviewer

6. Advertising Never Affects Reviews

Paid placements and reviews are kept separate:

  • Advertisers cannot pay to remove, hide, edit, or reorder reviews.
  • Buying a Preferred List placement does not change how reviews are moderated.
  • We do not pay for reviews, and we do not ask only happy customers to post.

7. How We Moderate

Every review and reply is checked by an automated filter when it is submitted. Content that clearly breaks this policy is blocked, and you are asked to edit it. Content the filter is unsure about is held until a person reviews it. Everything else may appear right away.

We may also review content after it is published, including when someone reports it. Depending on what we find, we may:

  • Leave it up
  • Remove only the part that breaks the policy, such as a phone number, without changing the meaning of the rest
  • Remove it entirely
  • Restrict or suspend the person who posted it

We do not promise to review every post, and leaving content up does not mean we agree with it. Reviews are the opinions of the people who write them.

8. Reporting Content

If you see content that breaks this policy, tell us through the Contact page. Include a link to the page, the review’s reference number if you have it, and a short explanation. We review reports in good faith and may not be able to tell you the outcome in every case.

If content suggests someone is in immediate danger, call 911 or your local emergency number first.

9. Removal Requests From Facilities and Businesses

We review removal requests from facilities, agencies, and businesses against this policy, the same as any other report. We will not remove a review just because it is negative, disputed, or bad for business. When you disagree with a review, the best response is usually a respectful public reply. We comply with valid court orders.

10. Copyright Complaints

If you believe content on Inmate Reviews infringes your copyright, send a notice through the Contact page that includes:

  • Your name and contact information
  • The copyrighted work you believe was infringed
  • A link to the content you want removed
  • A statement that you have a good-faith belief the use is not authorized by you, your agent, or the law
  • A statement, under penalty of perjury, that your notice is accurate and that you are the owner or authorized to act for the owner
  • Your physical or electronic signature

If your content was removed after a copyright notice and you believe that was a mistake, you can send a counter-notice through the same page.

11. Repeat Violations

We may suspend or permanently block people, businesses, and advertisers who repeatedly or seriously break this policy. Advertisers who break this policy may lose their placement as described in the Terms of Service.

12. Appeals

If we removed your content and you think we got it wrong, contact us through the Contact page within 30 days. Include the reference number you received when you posted, if you have it, and explain why the content follows this policy. A person will look at it again.

13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy as the site grows. The date at the top shows when it last changed. Content posted after a change is held to the updated policy.
